XRP vs. Stellar (XLM): Which Altcoin is the Better Buy for 2027? (2026)

In the world of cryptocurrency, the battle for dominance in real-world asset tokenization is heating up, with two key players, Stellar (XLM) and XRP (XRP), vying for the top spot. While both started as cross-border payment systems, their paths have diverged, and now they compete for the lucrative market of tokenizing financial assets. With the value of tokenized assets projected to skyrocket from $35 billion to a staggering $5.5 trillion by 2030, the outcome of this competition could significantly impact their future success. So, which coin comes out on top in this altcoin buy showdown?

Stellar, a nonprofit-sponsored project, has made significant strides in attracting institutional interest. The launch of the first U.S.-registered tokenized mutual fund by asset manager Franklin Templeton in 2021, holding over $650 million in assets, is a testament to its appeal. Stellar's native protocol-level compliance tooling is a significant advantage, allowing asset managers to implement regulatory-grade controls without the need for custom smart contracts. As a result, the total value of tradeable tokenized assets on Stellar has skyrocketed to nearly $3 billion, a tenfold increase since 2025. The real game-changer, however, is the potential partnership with the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), a financial powerhouse managing over $114 trillion in U.S. securities.

DTCC's decision to choose Stellar as the first public blockchain for tokenizing Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs, and Treasuries is a massive opportunity. While Stellar won't be onboarding all of DTCC's capital, even a fraction of this could attract billions more to the network, sending the price of XLM soaring. However, Stellar's progress is overshadowed by XRP's rapid institutional expansion. Ripple, the for-profit sponsor of XRP, has been on an acquisition spree, spending $1.2 billion to acquire Hidden Road, now known as Ripple Prime, a global multi-asset prime broker.

This move positions XRP as a turnkey solution for financial institutions, offering institutional financing rails that Stellar's nonprofit sponsor cannot match. Additionally, XRP's permissioned domains, activated in February, enable regulated financial businesses to build on-chain venues that comply with know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering rules. The success of XRP's spot ETFs, which have attracted over $1.4 billion in net inflows, further solidifies its institutional advantage. As a result, XRP is currently the better altcoin buy, with its for-profit sponsor and ETF access widening investor demand.

However, the verdict may change if DTCC's integration with Stellar produces substantial transaction volume through 2027 and 2028. The potential of this partnership could reshape the landscape, making it crucial to monitor the progress of both coins in this evolving market.
