Swapo's Resounding Victory in Erongo: A Comprehensive Analysis (2026)

Swapo's Triumphant Return: A New Era for Erongo?

After a period of shifting political tides, Swapo celebrated a resounding victory in Walvis Bay over the weekend, marking a significant comeback in the Erongo region. This win signals a potential shift in the local political landscape.

The party's success was undeniable, securing all seven constituencies and seizing complete control of the Erongo region. Moreover, Swapo emerged as the dominant force in the local authority elections, claiming 25 out of the 60 council seats across the region. This is a clear indication of the party's strengthened position.

Swapo's resurgence was particularly evident in Walvis Bay, where they regained control by winning five seats. The party also made significant gains in Swakopmund and Arandis, each contributing four seats to their tally. But here's where it gets interesting... The opposition parties, including the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), United Democratic Front (UDF), and others, were left to share the remaining seats.

The IPC secured 13 seats, while the UDF claimed 11, with smaller parties filling the rest. This outcome represents a stark contrast to the previous elections when Swapo lost control of Walvis Bay to the IPC. At that time, the IPC held the deciding vote through a coalition with the PDM.

This time, however, the PDM failed to secure any seats in Walvis Bay, paving the way for Swapo's clear majority.

A Historic First for Uis

Adding to the weekend's developments, Uis made history by establishing a local authority council for the first time after decades of being governed as a village council. This transition promises to give residents a greater voice in managing local affairs, a significant step towards local empowerment.

Swapo's Vision for the Future

Swapo's district coordinator for Walvis Bay, Patrick Bathromeus, expressed his excitement about the election results, emphasizing the party's primary goal of reclaiming Walvis Bay. Now back in power, the party intends to focus on revitalizing the town and fostering unity within the council. "Achieving this will require cooperation in the council chamber," he stated, highlighting Swapo's readiness to collaborate with all councillors to serve the residents' needs.

Bathromeus also outlined plans to prioritize service delivery and infrastructure development, particularly in housing and waste management. Incoming Walvis Bay rural constituency councillor Ruben Shikongo echoed these sentiments, expressing his commitment to building on the work of his predecessors.

Opposition Perspectives

In contrast, opposition parties are reflecting on their performance. PDM regional coordinator for Erongo, Roger Nautoro, suggested that the results reflect weaknesses within the opposition rather than a strong mandate for Swapo. He attributed the outcome to internal divisions and a lack of coordination among opposition parties. Nautoro called for unity among opposition parties to prepare for future elections, emphasizing the need to prioritize national interests. Outgoing Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes did not respond to questions, while IPC regional chairperson for Erongo, Aloisius Kangulu, indicated that the party would release a statement on the election results soon.
