A remarkable swim from a young talent has caught the attention of the swimming world. Gabi Brito, a 15-year-old National Junior Team member, has just dropped an impressive 21.95 seconds in the 50 Free at the Oceanside Sectionals. This achievement is even more remarkable when you consider that Brito is in the younger half of her age group.
On Thursday night, Brito split 21.95 on the leadoff leg of a Beach Cities Alpha 200 free relay, a personal best by a significant margin of 0.35 seconds. With this performance, she has tied with none other than Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske as the 8th-fastest swimmer in her age group's history.
But here's where it gets controversial... Brito's team, Beach Cities Alpha, finished 6th in that race, while the winning relay from Alto Swim Club included some notable names. Tanishi Gupta, Lillie Nordmann, Maren Byrne, and Hailey Preuss combined for a winning time of 1:32.34. Brito's performance, however, was a standout moment, and it sets her up for an exciting future in the sport.
Brito also contributed to the Beach Cities Alpha 800 free relay, splitting an impressive 1:46.29 on a rolling start. Again, Alto Swim Club took the top spot, with Nordmann and Preuss leading the way. Preuss, in particular, is poised for some personal bests later in the meet, as her best flat start in the 200 free is currently 1:50.43.
Other notable splits included a 1:44.75 from Alyssa Ton on Irvine Novaquatics' runner-up relay.
In the individual events, Lucy Flynn from Orange County Gold took the girls' 1000 free title with a time of 9:58.50, the only swimmer to break the 10-minute barrier.
The boys' distance race, the 1650 free, was won by Julien Rousseau, a Cal freshman and San Diego native. His time of 15:04.19 was an improvement of over eight seconds on his previous career best.
And this is the part most people miss... the importance of relays! Rose Bowl's boys dominated the 200 free relay with a time of 1:22.61, and Irvine Novaquatics took the boys' 800 free relay in 6:35.27, showcasing the depth of talent in these teams.
