England's Spin Edge: Can Vaughan's Call Beat India in Mumbai (T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Final) (2026)

England's Spin Advantage: Can They Beat India in the T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Final?

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes England's spin attack is superior to India's, and he's got a hunch that Harry Brook's team will emerge victorious in Thursday's T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai.

India, the pre-tournament favorites, suffered a setback when they lost to South Africa in the Super 8s phase and struggled in the group stage. England, on the other hand, has been on a winning streak, advancing to the last four with five consecutive victories, despite not yet delivering a flawless performance.

"They've found a winning formula," Vaughan shared on the Test Match Special podcast. "The win against New Zealand, even though it was a dead rubber, showcased their determination to get over the line."

England's batting has been inconsistent, with captain Harry Brook scoring a remarkable century against Pakistan. However, Vaughan highlights their bowling as a key strength, particularly the spin trio of Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks, as well as the seam bowlers Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Jamie Overton.

"England's spin attack is better than India's," Vaughan asserted. "Dawson, Rashid, and Will Jacks have been the tournament's best spin trio."

India's leading wicket-taker, spinner Varun Chakravarthy, has struggled in crucial matches, conceding 40 and 47 runs against the West Indies and South Africa, respectively. India's wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, who has a strong record against England, has only bowled three overs in the tournament, raising questions about their strategy.

Vaughan also praised England's exceptional fielding and alertness, noting their exceptional running between the wickets. He believes that England's ability to control small aspects of the game has been a significant factor in their success.

"I have a funny feeling that England can pull off a win in Mumbai," Vaughan said.

England is expected to retain Jos Buttler, an out-of-form opener, who has struggled with single-figure scores in the tournament. Vaughan suggests that Buttler's focus on technique might be hindering his performance.

"When you're not in top form, you naturally review your technique," Vaughan explained. "Jos is a hand-eye player. He needs to stare at the ball and react to the deliveries. The ramp shots, which he hasn't been playing, will be crucial on this pitch."

The semi-final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium promises an intense atmosphere, with India's loud partisan support. This match marks the third semi-final between the two teams in succession at the T20 World Cup, with England's 2022 win in Adelaide serving as a blueprint for their strategy.

All-rounder Sam Curran, who participated in the previous meetings, believes the 2022 victory sets a high standard for England.

"If we're aiming for a perfect game, we can draw inspiration from our 2022 win," Curran told BBC Sport. "The crowd will be electric, and it's a great opportunity for us to perform."

The Men's T20 World Cup: England vs. India, scheduled for 5 March at 13:30 GMT, will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website and app, with live text, in-play clips, and highlights available.
