Jordan Binnington's season has been a wild ride, and it took a turn for the worse with a recent blowout loss. But here's where it gets controversial... even the attempt to pull him from the game didn't go as planned!
After an impressive start to the year, Binnington's perfect save streak came to an abrupt end. On Saturday, he shut out the Montreal Canadiens with 26 saves, but Wednesday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks was a different story. Binnington faced 35 shots and conceded seven goals, resulting in a 7-3 loss for the St. Louis Blues.
The Blues' head coach, Jim Montgomery, tried to make a goalie change after the Blackhawks' seventh goal in the third period, but there was a twist. Backup goalie Joel Hofer was nowhere to be found! Hofer was apparently stuck in the tunnel leading to the dressing room, leaving Montgomery with no choice but to leave Binnington in net.
Montgomery remained tight-lipped about the incident post-game, and Binnington didn't face any more shots in the final minutes. With this loss, Binnington's record dropped to 8-11-6, and his save percentage took a hit, now sitting at .871 with a 3.55 goals-against average.
Binnington has had his moments of brilliance, like the shutout against the Habs and an overtime win against the New York Rangers, but his recent form has been inconsistent. In nine of his last eleven starts, his save percentage has dipped below the .900 mark.
Despite a successful 2025 season, which included backstopping Canada to an overtime victory at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Binnington's current form has raised questions. His record of 28-22-5 last season, with a .900 save percentage, suggests he can turn things around, but will he be able to replicate that success this season?
Defenceman Cam Fowler praised Binnington after the win against Montreal, calling him "outstanding" and crediting him for giving the team a chance to win. But will Binnington be able to regain his form and become a consistent performer for the Blues?
And this is the part most people miss... Team Canada has named Binnington to its Olympic roster, along with Logan Thompson and Darcy Kuemper. The question remains: who will be Canada's starting goalie? With Thompson and Kuemper both having impressive records and save percentages, it's a tough decision.
So, what do you think? Is Binnington's recent form a cause for concern, or just a blip on the radar? Should he be given more time to prove himself, or is it time for a change? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
